In early China, chinese women were expected to be good at four things: careful speech, industriousness, and graceful manners. Virtue was a highly valued attribute, and a chaste wife often received honours after her husband's death. In later years, this custom was reestablished by Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi. The word "wife" is used to describe a woman's role in her family's business.
