In Brazil, due to the worst drought in over 90 years, the country's Ministry of Regional Development has announced that it will be necessary to invest gigantic amounts of money in water management, which is not feasible without the participation of the private sector. This plan is supported by President Jair Bolsonaro.

It involves building reservoirs and water distribution and treatment systems, as well as sewage treatment plants.

Although Brazil has some of the world's largest freshwater resources, nearly 35 million of the country's 210 million people have no access to drinking water, and only about 100 million Brazilians can use sewerage and wastewater treatment plants. According to health ministry experts, this greatly increases the number of coronavirus infections amid the pandemic, which has taken the world's highest death toll in Brazil in recent weeks.

Even before the pandemic, in 2018, the country registered 230,000 hospitalizations for diseases transmitted by untreated water, such as gastroenteritis, typhoid fever and cholera. At the parliamentary meeting, Minister of Regional Development Rogerio Marinho stated that state and municipal governments will only be able to allocate 1 percent of the funds needed to upgrade and expand the water and sewage systems.

Marinho said that the goal of providing 99 percent of the population with safe access to drinking water will not be achieved until 2033, and promised that the same date would be set for the completion of a sewage collection system that will cover most of the suburbs of Brazil's major cities - the favelas, i.e. the districts inhabited by the poorest people.
