Windows Storage Server vs Synology NAS for Veeam Backups?

A bit of background. Running hyper-v with 2 x Windows Server 2016 STD vm's, and possibly adding a 3rd vm soon.

I'm looking to take advantage of the free Veeam Backup & Replication NFR license that's available to Spiceworks and I'm just wondering what's the best option in terms of a target for backups.

I originally planned to get a Synology NAS because they have the option to backup a copy to Backblaze or Amazon Drive, but I'm concerned that I might experience issues with backing up from Windows to a non-windows device/file system.

So, I am now considering using an old server that I already have, sticking some new hard drives in it, and using that with Windows Storage Server instead.

What would be my best option and if I go with the Windows Server Storage option, is there any method of syncing it to the cloud?

Or.... would I be better going for something like Acronis which has cloud backup as well as disk to disk backup?

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
