I yesterday encountered again the back-sync problem of OneDrive. I worked the entire day on an important word file in the office. I constantly saved it and before shutting down the laptop I saved it again. The file is located in my OneDrive folder so that is automatically synced. When I opened my laptop at home to continue all changes of the entire were gone and after 2h remote assistance with the useless Microsoft Customer's Service I was sure that everything is gone for good. I found a thread on another website discussing this problem since 2014. The basic idea of Onedrive seems to be a utility for recovery if the PC goes down. Well, therefore usually OneDrive keeps the online version. If there is now a sync problem, which is most of the time not visible for the user, OneDrive tends to substitute your local version by the online version. This happened to me already three times, but this time with the highest importance of data loss. I usually rename each file with an increment number in the end to overcome this problem of version-mixing, but even this strategy did not prevent the loss. Ok, data is gone I will redo it now, but for the future I would really appreciate a program that works like the Time Machine on Mac, but for Win10 with OneDrive as cloud. The basic concept would be, that the Backup software checks regularly which file was changed and creates for those who are changes another version of it on the cloud storage. With this I would have my local files and if I delete something I could go online and get the last uploaded version. Furthermore, if I mess up something I could use an older version and restore my losses. With the massive storage offers nowadays from OneDrive and other Clouds, multiply versions of a file should not be a problem. Maybe something like this software already exists but the last hours search did not reveal something useful for my and you know, I still have to redo the stuff I did yesterday.^^
